Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Science

(English language programme)

 

SIR’s Doctoral Programme aims to cultivate high-level Political Science and International Relations professionals who can independently engage in the teaching, research or management in institutions of higher learning, scientific research institutions, state agencies, and large enterprises and institutions. Through four years of training, doctoral students will attain solid research and practical skills:

1. Proficiency in searching and reading Chinese and English books, academic journals and important databases in the subject and related fields;

2. Ability to accurately and fully use the Chinese and English materials for critical literature review;

3. Ability to independently select topics and applications for important research topics in the subject area of ​​the discipline;

4. Write professional academic papers in English, allowing them to participate in international academic exchange activities.

At the end of the programme, graduates as senior researchers in political science and international relations, will be equipped with global vision, innovative spirit, solid field-knowledge, and skills of multicultural communication, especially between their home country and China. In terms of career choices, they are expected to become strong candidates for academic positions, senior experts in research institutions, consultants in world organizations and government bureaus.

Duration

4 years. In well-grounded cases, such as following an exchange programme overseas, the Doctoral programme could be extended up to 6 years.

 

Admission

Though the application can be directly submitted through China Scholarship Council, SIR strongly encourages the prospective students to apply directly, through UIBE’s School of International Education. 

The prospective candidates will be screened according to their learning performance, motivation for the study of International Relations, leadership qualities and extracurricular activities.

Additionally, applicants must hold an accredited Master's degree in International Relations, Political Science, Law or any other related major. Students who do not meet these minimum requirements, if otherwise admissible, may be assigned additional coursework in excess of degree requirements specified at the time of admission. Excellent personal and academic qualifications are required.

A certificate of English and Chinese language proficiency or certificate of attendance of previous English or Chinese-taught academic programmes may be required.

Doctoral Thesis

The Thesis is considered the capstone of the Doctoral programme and should emphasize the candidates’ ability to conduct solid independent research on complex topics in the field of Political Science.
